Cheerleading is often misunderstood. It’s often seen as bright smiles, sharp motions, and loud chants on the sidelines, but for those involved, it is much more than that. It’s a very demanding sport built on trust, discipline, and teamwork.
When asked how they first got involved in cheer, many team members shared similar stories. “I joined when I was young,” said Natalina, a junior on the varsity cheer team. “At first I thought it was just dancing and cheering, but throughout the years I learned it was way more than that.”
One of the biggest misconceptions about cheer is that it’s easy and it doesn’t take much work. “We spend hours and weeks practicing for games and rallies, sometimes even longer depending on the event and how everyone cooperates,” said Emma, a sophomore on the varsity cheer team.
With their next game on January 23rd, teamwork continues to plays a major role in cheer. Every routine depends on everyone doing their part, especially during stunts. “You have to have trust in your teammates and your stunt group for it to work,” said Sadie, a junior on the varsity team.
Sadie also explained, that cheerleading can become dangerous when team members lose focus. “If one of us isn’t focused, it can be dangerous and put the stunt group at risk of injury,” she said.
Despite the challenges, teammates on the Porterville High School cheer team say the rewards make it all worth it in the end. “There is no better feeling than walking off the track or basketball court after a successful game,” Natalina said.
In the end, cheerleading is more than what it seems. It takes skill, a strong mindset, and dedication. It’s a commitment and a passion.
