The History Of Halloween

Halloween is among the oldest traditions in the world as it touches on an essential element of the human condition: the relationship between the living and the dead. The observance evolved from ancient rituals marking the transition from summer to winter, associating it with transformation, which is still a central holiday theme. This old tradition can go back to the time of the Celtic festival of Samhain. The holiday we know as All Saints’ Day was called All Hallows’ Day, and the day before, when an evening mass was held, was All Hallows’ Eve. That name eventually got shortened to Halloween. By the early 20th century, most (candy-loving, costume-wearing) people celebrated Halloween across North America. Halloween falls on the 31st of October every year. For many people who celebrate it, the holiday is a chance to get together with friends and family and have spooky fun. There are all sorts of exciting ways to get in on the festivities of Halloween, from costume parties and macabre decorations to special seasonal activities like trick-or-treating pumpkin carving.(shout out to our O&G member Alex Cuevas 16 Birthday)
