What Is Agriculture?
Agriculture encompasses crop and livestock production, aquaculture, fisheries, and forestry for food and non-food products. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food. Agriculture is the science, art, or practice of cultivating the soil, producing crops, and raising livestock and in varying degrees the preparation and marketing of the resulting production. In Porterville in the 1860’s to the growth of orange orchard production in the 1880’s, planting, harvesting, packing and shipping oranges and other fruit has been a major industry in and around Porterville. The Central Valley is California’s agricultural hub. Located in the inland part of the state, it stretches 450 miles from Bakersfield to Redding.
