Have you seen what’s said to be the hottest movie of the summer, Barbie? Barbie came out in theaters on July 21, 2023, and stars many huge Hollywood celebrities, such as the famous actor Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the movie’s main characters. The story, directed by Greta Gerwig, has many hidden empowering messages towards women. Barbie is living her average and typical days when, randomly, one day, weird things happen to her. She’s advised to visit Weird Barbie, a Barbie who knows how to fix her problems. She’s told that she must travel to the real world and figure out why it’s happening. I found this movie both silly and motivating. It had compelling quotes and ideas ranging from equality to self-value. It was not just a simple kid movie about dolls and their luscious lives and boyfriends, but about Barbie figuring out her self-worth as a woman in today’s society and her reason to be. I truly enjoyed how the movie emphasized that a woman should not have to be with a guy to be seen. It also shows how a mother sees her kids grow up and leave things behind that once united them, like how the characters Sasha and Gloria bonded by playing with Barbie dolls. Barbie represents more than a doll; it is the ability to dream about wanting to be whatever any young kid desires to be when they are older, whether a doctor, astronaut, or lawyer. Regardless of what anyone thinks of the movie, this is the highest-grossing film directed by a female in cinematic history. If you want to watch the movie, click the link for the showtimes.
