Cross Country State Bound
On Thursday, November 17th, our Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams headed off to Woodward Park in Fresno, California, for the CIF Central Section Championships for the chance to win a section title. 2019 was the first and last time our Cross Country boys’ team won a section title in division 4. This season, the boy’s team headed into the race ranked #4 in D3, while the girls were ranked #21. Woodward Park is arguably one of California’s most famous Cross Country courses, as the best of the best around the nation compete there. From summer practices to tough workouts, coach Salas has prepared both teams well enough to compete to their best ability. Junior, Alesandro Escarzaga, also known as Sanji, led our panthers in the race, running a time of 16:42. Sure enough, right behind him was senior Dominic Welsh, finishing with a time of 16:55. Overall as a team, our boys took fifth place. However, individually, Sanji and Dom took 5th and 6th place. Sanji looks forward to next weekend, as he will be competing in the state championship against other state qualifiers. Humbled to be advancing, Sanji shares, “Glad to be going [State]. State competition is the goal for most athletes. It wouldn’t be possible without the people around pushing me to my limit. Special thanks to coach Salas. He has truly changed my mind and body.” Good luck to Sanji, who will represent our school at the state meet!
