Rivalries
A rival would be considered a person or a group of people like a team who are trying to do the same thing as someone else but trying to do it better. Rivalries tend to be thought of in pairs, and have been around since the beginning of man, but we tend to think of them in reference to siblings and sports most commonly. Here in Porterville, the rivalry that is most prevalent, and on everyone’s mind right now is the PHS and MHS rivalry. At the end of every sports season, our last regular season game is always against the Monache marauders. This fierce rivalry first began in the fall of 1969 and ever since then the two schools have battled each other not only through sports but educationally as well. One of the biggest college/football rivalries in history is the University of Michigan vs. Ohio State University. In 2021 about 111,156 people attended the big game of Michigan vs. Ohio. The teams have played 116 games total, the Michigan football leads the all-time series 59-51-6. Another rivalry that isn’t too far removed from us is the “Battle for the Bell”, a rivalry between the Lindsay and Strathmore football teams that dates back to the 1920s. On top of sports and school rivalries, there are also individual rivalries such as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr became rivals back in 1791 because of politics when Aaron Burr defeated Hamilton’s father-in-law for a seat in the U.S senate. Many rivalries end up producing amazing achievements as well… Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs, Nikola Tesla vs. Thomas Edison, and Marvel vs. DC to name a few. So while rivalries may be full of drama and heart-ache they are often the fuel a person or team needs to reach their goals.
