National Pet Day

National Pet Day Falls on April 11th of every year. It began when Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige founded NPD (National Pet Day) in 2006. Her main reasons as to why she founded this is because she wanted to raise awareness and bring attention about all the pets in shelters waiting to be adopted. You may have heard the term “Adopt, Don’t Shop” which she encouraged during the time, she wanted people to contact rescue organizations rather than animal breeders’. Data from 1973 from The Humane Society of the US estimated 13 million cats and dogs enter shelters every year, present day the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals says there’s approximately 6.5 million animals enter shelters nationwide. National Pet Day was originally just in the U.S until it soon expanded internationally in places such as Ireland, Italy, Israel and more. You can always use social media to show off your pet not only today but every other day as well. Make sure to make them feel extra love 🙂 .
