Halloween is a wide-known holiday, almost everyone celebrates it. If you’re unsure of what Halloween is, then this article is for you.
Halloween is a time for getting treats, going to parties, carving pumpkins, and decorating. But what is the history behind it? And why do we celebrate?
The origin of Halloween dates back thousands of years ago from a Celtic celebration festival that honored the end of the harvest season, and as well as a new year. During Samhain, the word of the living and dead were thought to be thin, because of this, many people would communicate and try to talk to their deceased loved ones.
The Celtics believed that communicating with spirits predicted the future, so they built things like bonfires and held ceremonies and wore costumes, which is where the costume wearing tradition comes from.
Dating back 2,000 years ago, Halloween does have things that symbolize it, such as Bats and pumpkins. When the Celtics held ceremonies around bonfires, it attracted bugs, which then resulted in bats, various folklore cited bats as “death” or “doom.” According to Nova Scotian Mythology, “the celtics had the idea that if a bat were sitting on a man’s house, that person was to die, and if it were to be on a woman’s house, she was to perish.”
Now that you know the history of Halloween, we hope you’ll enjoy and appreciate the unique holiday.
