Type O Negative was a Gothic/doom metal band that formed in Brooklyn, New York. They have 7 studio albums, some of which include Bloody Kisses (my personal fav!) and October Rust. They’ve released 93 songs altogether across their 7 albums. Out of all the songs, however, I believe that their best song is “I Don’t Wanna Be Me”.
Their song “I Don’t Wanna Be Me” is on their 6th album: Life is Killing Me. The album was released on June 17, 2003 and was #39 on the Billboard 200 Chart. It’s the second song on the album and is 5:09 minutes long.
I personally think that this is their best song because there’s a deeper meaning behind it. Peter Steele, the band’s lead singer, wrote this song because he was struggling with his mental health. He was tired of his addictions, fame, interviews, and overall being a rock star.
Also, “I Don’t Wanna Be Me” is their most famous song. It has 93 million listens on Spotify and 14 million views on YouTube. There was also a trend on TikTok featuring the famous guitar solo. The song blew up after this trend and led to Type O Negative to gain some more popularity.
In most instances, a band’s most popular song is their best song, and I believe this is an example of one of them. The overall composition of the song sounds really cool and I suggest you guys listen to the whole album! I’m also a Type O Negative fan myself, and I’d recommend “Can’t Lose You” and “Die With Me” ( ´ཀ` ). Happy listening!

I’m a HUGE fan. Have been for 35 years + and if I had to pick a fav song it would have to be Green Man or All Hallows Eve. What a difficult decision!!

As a hardcore Type O fan it’s REALLY hard to pick a favorite but it’s interesting that “I don’t wanna be me” is their most popular. With the prevalence of their songs with videos on MTV and their killer covers I’m a little surprised it’s that one. I honestly never looked that stuff up because I really don’t care what others think, I love what I love. I think their last album is their best. Pete was back in the groove and finally made the song they had bouncing around in their minds and referenced in their merch, the Profits of Doom. Mentally he was well or at least well enough to express excitement over working on a new Carnivore album too before he died in his sleep. He was taken too soon but we are all blessed by all the amazing work he put out and I, for one, am lucky enough to have seen him on over 5 tours of theirs throughout the years.
As for the best song, or as Pete would say the least worst of, I keep coming back to World Coming Down, the titular track of that album. It too speaks to Pete’s mental state in an album released before Life is Killing Me. It’s a techinal marvel with many movements to it and idk anyone who can’t relate at least a little bit to the chorus “and I know, I’m the one who brought it down” it’s just so so good.
Honestly tho there isn’t a bad Type O song, period. Their first album Slow, Deep, and Hard is before they found their sound but still is still amazing. The first song I ever heard was “Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity” and I was hooked ever since.
While Type O is a genre defining powerhouse of metal and their songs resonate with so many, to quote their liner notes “functionless art is merely tolerated vandalism.. We are the vandals.”
So maybe don’t focus on which one is best and listen to all of what Type O has released.
